
Each year, Children's Hospital Oakland provides pediatric training to approximately 100 medical students from medical schools throughout the United States.
This training occurs at a number of different levels:
Pediatric Clerkships for Fourth-Year Students
For fourth-year medical students desiring an elective or sub-internship experience, Children's offers a variety of clinical clerkships. In addition to providing an excellent educational experience, these one-month rotations allow prospective applicants the opportunity to see our residency training program firsthand.
Medical students function under the direct supervision of the senior resident and attending physician, and assist in the initial diagnostic approach and treatment plan for patients.
Students receive instruction in the specific diagnostic and therapeutic techniques performed on the rotation and are given responsibility commensurate with their interest, level of training and experience.
They participate actively in team rounds, case conferences, seminars and other formal teaching sessions.
We offer 18 pediatric clerkship positions each month in the following nine areas:
Applying for Clerkships
Elective clerkships are available to fourth-year students from all US schools, provided that they have successfully completed a core third year pediatric rotation, and if desiring an inpatient rotation at our hospital, had some prior inpatient experience as a third year .
