Our hospital was featured in a national television report on the CBS Evening about tougher Environmental Protection Agency standards aimed at reducing ozone/smog levels. The report included our staff in Primary Care and our Emergency Department. Mindy Benson, PNP of Primary Care was interviewed about our asthma program and the high volume of asthma patients we see each year who live near freeways.

“Video Game Addiction”

Jeff Sammis, an intern studying with Herb Schreier, MD of Psychiatry, was interviewed about video game addiction for a KTVU-TV news report. The American Medical Association is recommending that video game addiction be classified as a psychiatric disorder. Jeff recently completed research on the topic for his doctor of psychology degree.

“NICU Reunion”

One year old Ariel Lawrence of Antioch was featured in a news report about the hospital’s reunion of critically ill babies and our doctors and nurses. Ariel’s mother praised our hospital for saving her child’s life. Ariel was born prematurely and needed a very specialized type of open-heart surgery to survive. Ariel’s mom said our hospital was the only medical facility that offered this type of surgery in the region.

Bert Lubin, MD, Senior Vice President of Research at our research institute, CHORI, discussed the research institute's sibling donor cord blood program. Dr. Lubin advises parents to bank their newborn's cord blood if they already have an existing child that might be helped by their sibling's cord blood. In addition, he encourages public banking of cord blood.

Children's Hospital Oakland is appearing on a national television show called Little People, Big World. The program's stars are the Roloffs, a family with both little and average sized people. Scott Hoffinger, MD, of Orthopaedics and our staff are featured in several episodes about 16-year-old Zachary Roloff's surgery to straighten his leg.

“Wheel Tennis shoes”

Scott Hoffinger, MD, of Orthopedics was interviewed by KTVU for a news report about the latest fad in children’s shoes with wheels. The American Academy of Pediatrics published recommendations advising parents of the risks associated with these shoes. Some children have fallen and broken their wrists. Dr. Hoffinger said parents should be aware of the risks, but added that skateboards and trampolines can cause greater injuries.

Mindy Benson of Primary Care's Asthma Program was quoted about what Bay Area health organizations are doing to manage asthma in the region. In 2006, Children's Hospital Oakland treated 4,755 children for asthma and 1,800 were hospitalized. We have several asthma outreach programs that help educate parents and pediatricians in the community.
