Children's Hospital Oakland is appearing on a national television show called Little People, Big World. The program's stars are the Roloffs, a family with both little and average sized people. Scott Hoffinger, MD, of Orthopaedics and our staff are featured in several episodes about 16-year-old Zachary Roloff's surgery to straighten his leg.

Heather Fox, a social worker for Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant services was interviewed about the many issues that teenagers face when their family and friends are battling cancer. A San Francisco high school has created a support for students whose loved ones are coping with the disease.

Ann Petru, MD and social worker Peggy Macy of our Infectious Disease and Pediatric HIV/AIDS Program were featured in the Oakland Tribune and several other Media News Group newspapers. The front-page article discussed the recent cuts in NIH research funding and the need to continue clinical trials and drug treatment for pediatric HIV patients.

“Vitamin D Study”

Endocrinologist, Catherine Egli, MD, was interviewed for a news report about the importance of vitamin D. An upcoming study in the American Journal for Clinical Nutrition concludes that larger doses of vitamin D may assist in the prevention of cancer. This television report also points out how people in Northern California tend to lack vitamin D in the winter season because we lack sunshine. We obtain vitamin D via sunlight, vitamin supplements, some meats and vegetables and fish oils.

“Seizures Cut Short”

The Modesto Bee interviewed Peter Sun, MD, of Neurosurgery about how he nearly stopped his epileptic patient’s seizures. Eighteen year old, Ronald Velasquez, had as many as 80 seizures a day and had to wear a helmet to protect himself against head injuries when he seizured and fell to the ground. Dr. Sun performed a rare operation on his brain called, corpus callosotomy. Since then, the number of Ronald’s seizures has been dramatically reduced.

Jodi Stookey, PhD who works in Janet King's lab at CHORI was featured in this national women’s magazine about her study, which suggests drinking water instead of sugary drinks could lead to weight loss. Researchers found that the dieters who replaced all sweetened beverages with water lost an average of three pounds more in a year than dieters who did not.
