Summary

Karen Amorde-Spalding, MS, RD, CSP is an expert in pediatric nutrition. She is responsible for coordinating and providing medical nutrition therapy to children with complex medical and nutritional conditions. She works with various departments within Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland to address the nutritional needs of children whose health is either directly impacted by their nutritional intake, such as patients with diabetes or cystic fibrosis, or whose diets may not be age appropriate, which could result in patients being under or over weight. Customized nutritional programs are also important for children involved in traumas such as car accidents and those diagnosed with serious illnesses including cancers, tumors and anemias.

Karen leads Children’s Hospital Oakland’s Ketogenic Diet Program, the largest program of its kind in Northern California with more than 125 patients treated. She feels comfortable discussing this program as well as providing tips on developing good nutritional habits for children, breast feeding and therapeutic diets for children.
