Summary
Catherine Egli, MD, is the director of our endocrinology and diabetes division. She is a pediatric endocrinologist with a special emphasis on diabetes. Dr. Egli specializes in type 1 (juvenile) diabetes and type 2 diabetes. At Children’s Hospital Oakland, our endocrinologists have seen more than 1,000 diabetes cases in the past 10 years. Nearly 25 percent have type 2 diabetes, which is linked to childhood obesity. Dr. Egli also sees patients with conditions related to early (precocious) puberty. These children reach puberty early because of hormonal disturbances. Early onset of puberty, if untreated, can cause several problems, including stunted adolescent growth and emotional distress.
Compelling Fact
One out of every 3 children born in the year 2000 will eventually develop diabetes. An increase in the obesity rate in the United States is the reason for this predicted upsurge. Nearly one-third of all adults in the United States are obese.
