Mary Rutherford, MD, is an expert in pediatric emergency medicine. She leads the emergency team at Children’s Hospital Oakland, Northern California’s busiest Level 1 pediatric trauma center and emergency department. She and her team treat and stabilize children with problems ranging from traumatic injuries and heart conditions to severe flu symptoms. However, asthma is the most frequent reason for visits to Children’s Emergency Department. Cuts and broken bones are also common reasons for emergency visits. Dr. Rutherford can speak about a variety of topics, including advanced pediatric life support (APLS), injury prevention and disaster preparedness.
Trauma is the leading cause of death and disability in the pediatric and young adult age groups. Most traumatic injuries are preventable through education, the use of safety devices or parents avoiding potentially hazardous situations.
