New Med Staff Chief Brings Wide Experience to Children's

Vipul N. Mankad, MD, was named senior vice president and chief medical officer at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland, a new position carrying expanded responsibilities beyond those assigned to past Children’s medical directors. Dr. Mankad will be a senior member of the executive team advising Frank Tiedemann, Children’s president and chief executive officer.

Dr. Mankad joined Children’s Hospital in September to lead medical affairs, participate in strategic planning, design of new facilities, and related administrative decisions, and serve as a liaison between physicians and the community.

“Dr. Mankad has an exceptional record of excellence,” said Frank. “We share the same vision of supporting the important work of our physicians by helping them to better serve their patients. Our physicians are experts in 31 pediatric specialties and serve in sites all over the Bay Area and beyond. I welcome Dr. Mankad’s talents to help us grow and reach even more families who need our services.”

Dr. Mankad has previously led clinical, medical education and research programs. Most recently, he served as a senior medical advisor to the United States Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and to the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

“Children’s Hospital Oakland has highly regarded physicians and scientists who consistently improve the practice of pediatric medicine through research, innovation and compassionate health care,” said Dr. Mankad. “I am eager to work beside some of the most highly regarded physicians in pediatrics. Their work is poised to lead us to smarter and more efficient ways to protect or restore the health of children.”

Dr. Mankad has also served in leadership roles at U.S. and other hospitals, including medical centers in Lexington, Kentucky; Mobile, Alabama and Chicago.

He was chair of Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and later led a group practice of 480 physicians at the university’s Chandler Medical Center. Before that he served as division chief of Pediatric Hematology Oncology at the University of South Alabama Medical Center, where he founded and directed the College of Medicine’s Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center.

Dr. Mankad also worked from 1975 to 1979 as director of Pediatric Education at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago, where he was responsible for the pediatric residency program.

He has more than 150 publications, including 87 full-length manuscripts, and has edited two books, one on pediatrics and one on sickle cell disease.

Dr. Mankad received his medical degree at Maharaja Sayajirao University’s Government Medical College in Baroda, India. He continued his training as an intern, resident and fellow in Chicago, New York and London.

Dr. Mankad spent time as a pediatrics intern and resident at Chicago’s Cook County Hospital before a final pediatrics residency year at New York University Medical Center’s Bellevue Hospital.

He then completed a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at Bellevue, a stint as senior registrar in pediatrics at London’s Guy’s Hospital and another fellowship in pediatric hematology oncology at Cornell Medical College/New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

In 2006 Dr. Mankad and his wife, Aparna, also a physician, celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with their two sons, daughters-in-law and three grandchildren.
