Children's Hospital Oakland
Residency Program

ABout the COMMUNITY

One of Children's Hospital Oakland's greatest strengths as a training program lies in the diverse patient population we serve. Our patients reflect the rich multicultural and socioeconomic variety of the surrounding Bay Area community of six million residents. The high volume of patients served by Children's Hospital provides extensive exposure to a spectrum of common and rare pediatric conditions.

In addition, a relatively large local population of recent immigrants from developing countries creates the continual challenge of recognizing more exotic diseases. Our program provides exposure to many different cultural beliefs and health practices, and we actively encourage a greater understanding of the cross-cultural issues encountered by the practicing pediatrician.

About a third of our almost 10,000 admissions a year are admitted by private physicians in the community. The remainder come through our Emergency Department and outpatient clinics.

Residents assume care responsibilities for all our patients, regardless of whether they are assigned to a private attending's service or the "house" service.
