Graduates of our residency training program easily find positions in a variety of settings. The number choosing primary care is about equal to the number choosing to continue training in a subspecialty fellowship — at Children's Hospital Oakland or at other top programs around the country.
Where our graduating residents go, and what they do:
Type of Medicine (2000 - 2006):
Primary Care: Geographical Location (2000 - 2006)
Subspecialty: Geographical Location (2000 - 2006)
Hospitalist: Geographical Location (2000 - 2006)
Primary Care Settings (2000 - 2006)
Subspecialty Fellowship Choices (2000 - 2006)
Subspecialty Fellowship Locations: 2000 - 2006

Children's Hospital Oakland's reputation as an outstanding training program for primary care physicians serves our residents well. Every year private practices, large HMOs and community clinics compete for our graduates.
The close-knit pediatric community of the San Francisco East Bay includes a remarkable number of graduates from our training program, many of whom continue their involvement at Children's through service as monthly ward attendings.
The members of our teaching faculty actively help residents make career decisions. Recognizing that career choices can change dramatically during training, discussion of this topic is an important part of twice-yearly resident evaluation sessions with the residency program director. During elective months residents are encouraged to spend time in settings they may consider for future employment.
