Children's Hospital Oakland is also a major center of medical research. Bertram Lubin MD, senior vice president, research, leads research efforts that now include more than 250 investigators and staff, and an annual research budget of more than $47 million.
Children’s scientists are supported by the National Institutes of Health, national and international foundations, and the biotechnology community.
Two Children's scientists have received prestigious NIH MERIT Awards, and one is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Basic research programs at Children’s are located in a recently restored, historic, state-of-the-art, 62,000 square-foot facility. The Pediatric Clinical Research Center (PCRC), based at the hospital, provides the infrastructure for many of the NIH-supported translational research programs.
Children's Hospital’s research institute is recognized as a leading world center for basic and clinical research in sickle cell disease and thalassemia.
Combined clinical and laboratory research programs in infectious diseases, pulmonary medicine, pediatric intensive care, neonatology, genetics, oncology and general pediatrics are examples of the bench-to-bedside concept that is a driving force at Children’s.

Pediatric residents at Children's Hospital Oakland benefit greatly from the educational and research opportunities the research institute offers.
The institute’s desire to educate future researchers also helps Children's fellows in hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, critical care medicine, and emergency medicine; post-doctoral fellows in hematology, immunology and stem cell biology; medical students; and NIH-funded minority students from colleges and high schools.
Residents seeking careers in biomedical and behavioral research can spend elective time developing projects at the research institute. Attending noon research conferences and research seminars can help residents stay abreast of scientific advances throughout their residency.
