Health Sciences Library
Aided by a generous endowment, our Health Sciences Library was recently enlarged. Its location in the Outpatient Center allows full display of its comprehensive collections of material on pediatric medicine and related disciplines.
The library has books, journals, file materials and audiovisual aids, as well as interactive search and retrieval technology. While primarily focusing on clinical medicine, the collection also covers administrative, managerial, research, clerical and other non-clinical hearlthcare services.
Material not available in our collection can be obtained in a few days through interlibrary loans. Residents have 24-hour-a-day access to the library. Residents may also purchase medical books through the library at significant savings.
Internet services
All house officers have access to self-directed Internet-based searches of medical literature using databases such as MEDLINE through PubMed, OVID or MD Consult; CINAHL through EBSCO (nursing and allied health); HEALTHSTAR through OVID (non-clinical medical topics) and MEDLINEPlus. Library staff can also perform searches on specific topics. Up-To-Date, GIDEON and Red Book Online are also available.
Hospital Information Systems
The HIS system available to all house officers gives access to laboratory data retrieval and analysis, computerized admission and pharmacy orders, radiology and pathology reports, patient demographic data, patient appointment scheduling and resident worksheets. HIS staff continue to regularly add new features.
All hospital staffers receive an email account, accessible, along with word processing and the Internet, throughout the hospital. Residents can search medical literature from virtually any computer terminal, not just computers in the Health Sciences Library.
Children's Hospital Oakland has also started to move to a fully electronic medical record system.
