Children's Hospital Oakland
Residency Program

visiting medical students

Children's Hospital Oakland provides clinical training in pediatrics for approximately 100 medical students a year from medical schools throughout the United States.

This training occurs at a number of different levels. Second-year medical students from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, learn some of their pediatric physical diagnosis skills at our hospital under the guidance of our teaching faculty.

More than 70 fourth-year medical students from schools throughout the country come to Children's Hospital Oakland for pediatric clerkships and subinternships. Residents play a major role in teaching these students.

Pediatric clerkships
For fourth-year medical students desiring an outstanding elective or subinternship experience, Children's Hospital Oakland offers clinical clerkships in a variety of settings. These one-month rotations are invaluable in allowing prospective applicants the opportunity to closely evaluate our residency training program.

Medical students function under the direct supervision of the senior resident and attending physician, and assist in the initial workup, diagnostic approach and treatment plan on a limited number of patients.

Students receive instruction in the specific diagnostic and therapeutic techniques performed in pediatrics and are given responsibility commensurate with their interest, level of training and experience. They participate actively in team rounds, case conferences, seminars and other formal teaching sessions.

We offer nine clerkship options, including inpatient wards, Intensive Care Nursery, Primary Care, Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, Adolescent Medicine, Neurology and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. We provide 18 pediatric clerkship positions each month.

Applying for clerkships
Clerkships are available to students from all United States medical schools and can be scheduled independently by calling or writing to the assistant program director at the address below.
