Surgery is a more positive experience for children when they are active participants in their own care and their parents understand the process, so discussions with the patient and the family are part of the pre-operative routine at Children’s Hospital.
For outpatients, we encourage a pre-anesthesia evaluation visit. Our Child Life specialist will meet with the family to explain the process in a manner appropriate for the child’s age, abilities and previous hospital experience. Children can handle facemasks and other equipment used in the operating room and have their questions answered—often before they’re asked.
