Blood & Marrow Transplant Program

Facilities

Excellent care takes place in excellent facilities. Our physical space is designed to meet the clinical, social, and emotional needs of children and families in the most effective and friendly way possible.

BMT Unit

Our 10,000 square-foot Blood and Marrow Transplant unit is designed specially for family-centered care. An air filtration system minimizes the risk of infection to children undergoing treatment. Immunocompromised patients can move about safely within this specially filtered area, making the transplant experience less stressful and fostering a sense of community among the families of patients undergoing transplants. The space features a school/play room, family meeting areas and 12 single-bed rooms with sleeping accommodations for parents.

Day Hospital

Clinical facilities at Children's Day Hospital include three isolation rooms and a 17-bed unit where apheresis and transfusion procedures can be administered without an overnight stay.

HLA Lab

The HLA Lab is equipped with the technology to type HLA genes and screen transplant recipients and stem cell donors for compatibility. The laboratory also uses quantitative analysis of donor-recipient chimerism (a test to detect a mixture of donor and host cells after transplant) for post-transplant engraftment analysis.

Cryopreservation Lab

Children’s BMT Program utilizes the stem cell processing & storage services provided by the FACT certified stem cell lab located at the Sutter Medical Center Alta Bates Berkeley campus, which also supports the SMC Adult BMT Programs.
