Emergency Department

In a life-threatening emergency, call 911 immediately.

Children’s Hospital Oakland's level 1 pediatric trauma center and emergency department is the Bay Area's busiest. It's also the Bay Area's only emergency department completely dedicated to the care of children and staffed 24/7 with certified pediatric emergency medicine specialists.

We treat children from birth to 18 years. Adult patients presenting at the ED are treated and stabilized before transfer to an appropriate adult facility. Less acutely ill pediatric patients are triaged to the ED 2 area.

The ED also functions as the gateway to medical care for many East Bay children; about 60 to 70 percent of patients admitted to Children’s are first seen in the ED. Asthma is the most frequent reason for visits to the Emergency Department.

Obstetrical services are not available.
