Asthma brings more children to the ED than any other condition, and education and prevention efforts have been shown to reduce some patients’ ED visits by up to 80 percent.
Children’s Hospital Oakland has created a five-bed asthma care unit within the ED as an enhanced environment for asthma education while our patients undergo efficient standardized asthma treatment.
A staff respiratory therapist educates patients and families on asthma prevention and the proper use of medication. During the visit, videotapes are available to reinforce the education and prevention message. Unit staff want to make sure every patient goes home with an Asthma Action Plan.
