Gracie was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), a cancer of the white blood cells, when she was 19 months old.

Christopher, a sickle cell patient, shows the Exjade pills that have replaced the all night Desferal infusions he needed to keep his iron overload in check. Thanks in part to clinical trials carried out at Children's, the oral iron chelator Exjade received FDA approval last year. The lives of sickle cell and thalassemia patients were made ever more comfortable because of it. LEARN MORE
The Hematology/Oncology department at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland is at the forefront of treatment and research, developing and evaluating treatments that offer the best opportunities for survival and preservation of quality of life.
We provide access to all diagnostic and treatment methods available, including the option to participate in clinical trials using experimental therapies. Our goal is to provide state-of-the-art care in a warm and supportive environment, that includes ongoing direct communication with your primary care physician.
Our comprehensive services include programs for hemophilia, thalassemia, and sickle cell disease. Our sickle cell program is the largest in the western United States and includes adult patients. We also have programs in neuro-oncology, thrombophilia, stem cell transplantation, and bone marrow transplantation.
Facilities
The Hematology/Oncology department has its own 25-bed inpatient unit with private, air-filtered isolation rooms. A 20-bed day-use transfusion and chemotherapy unit in Children’s Outpatient Center includes a pheresis program and a bone marrow transplantation unit. We have one of only four Ferritometers—a machine that uses a super-cooled magnet to painlessly measure liver iron—in the world. Housing is available in the neighborhood for parents during their child’s treatment.
