Our unique multidisciplinary team is here to help with world-class care in a compassionate environment. Team members may include specialists from Neurosurgery, Oncology, Radiation Therapy, Rehabilitation Medicine, Neuropsychology, Neurology, Opthalmology, Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology and other specialties.
Neurosurgery
Successful brain tumor treatment requires a skilled and aggressive neurosurgeon like Children's Hospital's Dr. Peter Sun. Patients and families appreciate his compassionate attitude.
Oncology
Dr. Joe Torkildson and Dr. Caroline Hastings have helped children with central nervous system tumors for decades. They are assisted by Dr. Jonathon Finlay, a world renowned neuro-oncology expert. Dr. Finlay comes to Oakland regularly from Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to consult and support our program. Dr. Finlay feels that
the optimal environment for the management of children with cancer in general and brain cancer in particular is a children’s hospital.
Radiation Therapy
A skilled and meticulous radiation therapist is often needed to minimize potential side effects while providing the greatest chance for a cure. Dr. Patrick Swift and the staff at Alta Bates Comprehensive Cancer Center collaborate with Children's team to offer such therapy.
Rehabilitation Medicine
Dr. Jacob Neufeld evaluates all neuro-oncology patients at Children’s Hospital Oakland. He designs a treatment plan for each child that aims to maximize return of physical functioning.
Neuro-Psychology
The cognitive development of children with brain tumors can be affected by their condition. Early recognition and expert intervention can minimize possible damage.
Dr. Seth Ubogy, our board-certified neuropsychologist, uses standardized tests and clinical observations to understand a child’s cognitive development. Knowledge of brain development/organization and the effects of various forms of brain injury enables Dr. Ubogy to help guide treatment and educational planning. Dr. Ubogy works exclusively with our neuro-oncology population.
Dr. Dina Hankin, our psychologist, works with families and school systems to develop a plan for helping each child reach their learning and educational potentials.
