How To Apply

PROSPECTIVE VOLUNTEER APPLICANTS

Due to very high interest in our programs, we expect all volunteer positions to be filled this summer. As a result, we are not accepting new applications for summer volunteering. Please check back in early August for the volunteer application; we will resume the application process at that time.

If you have already submitted your application or are in the process of submitting your application, your application will be processed. However, we cannot guarantee placements beginning before August at this time.

Volunteers at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland make a difference in the lives of our patients and their families every day. Our volunteers are a diverse, well trained group of individuals who generously give thousands of hours each year to support hospital staff and patients.

Children's Hospital Oakland's service-based volunteer program helps meet the needs of patients, patient families and staff. It is not a job-training program, an internship, nor does it provide medical shadowing. We do not accept court-ordered placements.

REQUIREMENTS

Volunteers must:

Be 16 years or older
Commit to a minimum of one shift per week for at least six months of continuous service, and a total minimum commitment of 100 hours
Pass a background check
Be in good general physical and mental health
Have no criminal record
Submit a completed Volunteer Application & Health Clearance form (see note below)

VOLUNTEER APPLICANT HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

Due to a change in CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommendations and Hospital policy that increases patient protection, we now require that applicants submit proof of Chicken Pox (Varicella) immunity.

Applications must include the Health Clearance form (version date 2010) with Section 3–Chicken Pox Immunity information completed. Applications received without Section 3–Chicken Pox Immunity requirements will be returned.
