At Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI), our approach to pediatric research and development is one of the most results-oriented ones in existence today. Not content with merely performing the research and making new strides in the scientific community, we've made it our goal to employ those findings in a real-world setting.
Bringing the science within reach of today's leading pediatricians means that we can all look forward to better outcomes. For children, for families, and for the future, CHORI not only asks all the right questions—we provide the answers, too.
Clinical Research at CHORI
Clinical research is the foundation of everything we accomplish here at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. Advances in disease prevention, treatment, and cures can only be done when all the clinical research is there to build upon, which is why CHORI places so much emphasis here.
All of CHORI's individual Research Centers are actively involved in pediatric clinical research, some of which is being conducted in tandem with other leading organizations and scientists from around the world. We are currently working toward cures and treatments for such conditions as pediatric cancers, sickle cell disease and thalassemia, diabetes, asthma, and cystic fibrosis, among others. To better understand some of the most challenging diseases affecting children today, CHORI researchers design and participate in national and international clinical studies and trials, as well as lab-based studies. CHORI researchers hope to dramatically improve the repertoire of tools for disease prevention and management.
Translational Research at CHORI
While our clinical research efforts have made a name for CHORI in the scientific community, it's our translational research that has immediate value for our patients. The research we do every day will affect our ability to cure and improve outcomes for patients, which is why our translational work builds on the clinical research to reach new levels of success. Adopting a true bench-to-bedside process, we are able to harness knowledge from our scientific research to create new treatments, drugs, and medical technologies that can be used right away.
Also known as technology transfer, this is the area where we take collaboration to the next level, combining research, development, and innovation to create hands-on solutions for use by physicians practicing hands-on medicine. In fact, in the past 5 years alone, CHORI researchers have seen 25 inventions hit the market, making us one of the leading biotech enterprises in the entire Bay Area.
By applying basic findings to the prevention and treatment of pediatric disease, we can not only look forward to a better future, but make real progress right now—for those who need it most. Learn more about CHORI's clinical studies and pediatric clinical trials, and you could be part of the cure.
