Current Hematology Oncology Fellows
Third Year Fellows
Ana Aguilar, MD
Children's Hospital Oakland Experience: I liked that the program is very strong in Hematology, most of the hospitals have a good number of Oncology patients but few have a strong Hematology program. Living in California is an added bonus.
Current Research: The cytotoxic effect of sphingadienes on neuroblastoma cells. Grant Awarded 07-01-12: St. Baldrick's Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship for Childhood Cancer Research./
Clinical Interest: Pediatric neuro-oncology and international outreach
Pediatric Residency: SUNY Downstate Medical Center, New York, NY
Medical School: Universidad Evangelica de El Salvador
Undergraduate: El Salvador
Anne Marsh, MD
Children's Hospital Oakland Experience: My interview day at Children's Hospital Oakland was a remarkably positive experience and I remember walking out the front door of the hospital thinking to myself, "these are my kind of people and this is my kind of place." The program is very well balanced and I knew that not only would the depth and breadth of the hematology training at Children's Hospital Oakland be second to none, but the oncology exposure would also be exceptionally strong.
Current Research: Microparticles as Biomarkers of Osteonecrosis of the Hip in Sickle Cell Disease. To test the hypothesis that cell-derived microparticles are involved in the development of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) in sickle cell disease (SCD), and might thereby serve as a predictive biomarker, we are conducting a pilot case-control study comparing microparticle levels in patients with SCD who have ONFH compared to those that do not.
Clinical Interest: Sickle Cell Disease
Pediatric Residency: University of Wisconsin
Medical School: University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health
Undergraduate: Winona State University
Second Year Fellows
Esteban Gomez, MD
Children's Hospital Oakland Experience: Children's Hospital Oakland offers a wide range of in-depth clinical experiences. General oncology, neuro-oncology, general hematology, hemostasis/thrombosis, sickle cell, thalassemia, and bone marrow transplant are all strengths at Children's Hospital Oakland. In addition, Children's Hospital Oakland has a wide range of research experiences available to clinical fellows. From oncology to hematology, there are exciting opportunities for the research portion of fellowship. Also, Children's Hospital Oakland offers the opportunity to help with a community with limited access to healthcare which makes for a more diversified patient population. Also, the weather is great and the San Francisco bay area has anything you could ask from a city.
Current Research: Iron Overload in Beta Thalassemia and the Mitochondrial Genome. My project is examining alterations in the mitochondrial genome that occur in patients with thalassemia major and relating these changes to the extent of iron overload and target organ injury present in these patients. This project utilizes qPCR technology and next generation to analyze the mitochondrial genome alterations found in these patients and also in a cell culture model.
Clinical Interest: General Hematology/Oncology
Pediatric Residency: Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Phoenix , Arizona
Medical School: UCLA School of Medicine
Undergraduate: Stanford University
Monica Khurana, MD
Current Research: The Rubix of Ferritin: Implications of Structural Changes in Ferritin Ion Channels in Iron Overload. We would like to understand better the structure of the ferritin protein and how manipulation of its ion channels regulates iron entry into and exit from the protein. Such information may enable more effective chelation in patients with iron overload secondary to chronic transfusions.
Clinical Interest: Hemoglobinopathies
Why Children's Hospital Oakland: The patient diversity and volume provide a breadth of learning opportunities without feeling overwhelmed. I appreciate how easily accessible our excellent mentors are.
Pediatric Residency: Emory University School of Medicine / Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
Medical School: Indiana University School of Medicine
Undergraduate: Virginia Commonwealth University
