On March 15, the Outpatient Center at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland will transform into an old fashioned barber shop during the 7th annual St. Baldrick's fundraising event. Children's families, staff, and supporters will take their turn in the barber’s chair and shave their heads to raise money for lifesaving cancer research. The head-shaving is a symbolic gesture of solidarity with cancer patients, many of whom lose their hair during chemotherapy.
Worldwide, more than 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and it remains the leading cause of death by disease among children in the United States. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation grant funds are critical to continue the battle against this devastating disease. With a goal of raising $250,000, we hope to have more than 100 participants registered to shave their heads to help conquer childhood cancers.
Eight-year-old 2014 Ambassador, Harlem Clemons and his family will be in attendance at this year’s event. Harlem was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at the age of 5 and underwent six months of chemotherapy. Today he is cancer free and a powerhouse on the track and soccer field.
Join patients, friends and colleagues to show solidarity for our patients and support childhood cancer research and eradicate this deadly disease. Our Shave-A-Thon has been one of the leaders in this national event and we want to keep the momentum going! Create a team, join a team, find an inspiration, and participate in the movement.
You can participate by supporting someone willing to shave their head, being a shavee, donating
, or being a volunteer.
