Pediatric Cancer and Hematology Services in Reno
The Pediatric Hematology Oncology division at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland
has been caring for children in Northern Nevada and the Eastern California Sierras in our Reno Clinic for over 25 years.
We provide a level of cancer care for children and teens that can only be achieved by a nationally recognized children’s hospital (one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States)
--with the added benefit that local patients don’t have to leave town to receive cancer treatment.
Because Benioff Children’s Hospital is a
nationally ranked children’s hospital and research institute, our patients receive the latest, most-effective cancer treatments and have access to innovative therapies through clinical trials--
many of which may not be available elsewhere.

Seamless Transition of Care
If your child requires a higher level care than can be provided locally, such as Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) or Neurosurgical/Neuro-Oncology care, they will be transitioned to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland for this highly specialized care and then come back home and managed locally by our expert Reno team.
This seamless transition of care gives families coordinated local care without the compromise of access to clinical trials or high level expertise. And because we work so closely with our patients’ referring physicians, we are able to maintain excellent continuity of care.

Ongoing Care for Cancer Patients
Our experts – from physicians to nurses–understand the special needs of children with cancer and make sure that he or she is supported during the treatment journey and beyond. This is particularly well illustrated by our approach to cancer survivors.
The overall survival rate for childhood cancer today is over 80%
with over 300,000 survivors in the United States. But many survivors experience chronic late effects of their treatment, including both medical and psychosocial problems.
Through our Survivors of Childhood Cancer Program
we give children specialized care that focuses on surveillance and management of late effects of cancer treatment. To accommodate the needs of our Northern Nevada community ‘s young cancer survivors, Dr. Robert Raphael directs this multi-disciplinary clinic in Reno. Components of the program include:
- Patient and family education unique to the cancer and related long term effects
- Coordination of healthcare with primary care and other specialty providers
- Psychosocial assessment and support
- Assistance in transitioning from pediatric to adult-oriented health care
