The Level One Trauma Center at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is a premiere training center for the management of pediatric trauma. The Trauma Education Program strives to provide core knowledge, career development, and supervised experience at all levels and across all disciplines. The program includes nurses, medical students, junior level resident physicians, senior level fellows and attending physicians.
Children’s Hospital Oakland is an ACGME-accredited institution with in-house training programs in Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine. Each year, ninety-plus Children's-based pediatric residents and pediatric emergency medicine fellows receive pediatric trauma training. At the most senior level, each year we accept a pediatric surgery fellow for training (accreditation in process) that is daily involved in every aspect of care for our injured children.
In addition to the in-house residents and fellows, multiple other programs from around the Bay Area receive a significant portion of their pediatric training with us. These include:
- General Surgery Residents (University of California, San Francisco East Bay Surgery)
- Emergency Medicine Residents (University of California, San Francisco and Alameda County Medical Center)
- Orthopedic Surgery Residents (University of California, San Francisco)
- Orthopedic Surgery Residents (St. Mary's Medical Center)
- Anesthesia Residents (University of California, San Francisco)
- Pediatric Critical Care Fellows (University of California, San Francisco-Children's Oakland Program).
Residents trained at Children’s Hospital Trauma Center have gone on to do Trauma Surgery or Pediatric Emergency Fellowships in hospitals throughout the country. We are proud to be an integral part of training the next generation of physicians to care for the most critical trauma patients.

Children’s Hospital Oakland has had the privilege of having a world class research center associated with the medical center. The Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI) has built a reputation as one of the most productive and well-funded children’s research facilities in the country. This research support helps us to bring the most cutting edge clinical ideas to our children.
We have developed a cooperative relationship with the psychology department at University of California, Berkeley in the forming of the CHILD group. This helps to coordinate research efforts for children specifically with neurologic or psychological issues, such as concussion or PTSD.
Children’s Hospital of Oakland is affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco. This brings an additional level of support to the research and academic efforts at the Trauma Center and the entire hospital.
