Behavioral pediatrics CLINIC
Child development center
The Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic is committed to providing psychotherapy and psychological evaluation to children ages 3 to 12 who are experiencing difficulties with behavioral regulation, attention, learning, emotional, and developmental issues. We work intensively with the child, providing individual play therapy, family therapy, group therapy, psychological testing, and school and community intervention. We serve a multicultural population of low-income families. When required, we work collaboratively with developmental pediatricians. A portion of our work is home or schoolbased.
Training Goals
In addition to the goals common to the psychology training program, a primary placement at the Behavioral Pediatrics clinic incorporates the following goals:
- To provide training in a broad range of psychological testing useful for diagnostic clarification and treatment planning in children
- To develop competence in child, family and group therapy, particularly aimed at reducing acting-out behaviors in children.
Training Methods and Supervision
Interns work a 40-50 hour week during which they see approximately 10 therapy patients/families, conduct ongoing testing, and participate in parent and/or child therapy groups. They also have the opportunity to create their own summer group therapy curriculum, with staff support. Additionally, interns rotate through the other Children's Hospital
internship site (Dept. of Psychiatry) for one day each week.
In addition to 2 hours of individual supervision, group supervision is provided for 1½ hours weekly for each of the following areas:
- testing
- child psychotherapy
- group therapy
Weekly staff meetings for purposes of case collaboration, administrative issues, and training regarding community agencies of relevance to our clients are provided.
Our staff is integrative in orientation with particular emphasis on family systems, developmental, object relations and cognitive behavioral theories. Case discussion, videotaping of sessions and one-way mirror supervision are utlilized.
Weekly didactic training seminars covering a variety of issues of importance to becoming a child psychologist are offered in conjunction with the other Children's Hospital internship sites.
A variety of testing instruments are provided for training and clinical purposes including include measures of:
- cognitive and adaptive functioning
- academic success
- processing areas
- memory and language screens
Additionally, various formal and informal projective measures are used.
Spanish language testing is available. Interns complete a minimum of 4-6 full batteries a year.
