The Hematology and Oncology Department at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland (CHRCO) provides premier care to pediatric patients with hematologic and oncologic diseases. Lead by world-class physicians such as Drs. Elliott Vichinsky, James Feusner, and Mark Walters, we offer patients the best available treatments while delivering compassionate care. In addition, our unwavering dedication and commitment to biomedical research continues to advance the understanding and treatment of both hematologic and oncologic diseases.
CHRCO Highlights
CHRCO provides a unique blend of expert, specialized care for children in northern California and the surrounding states. The size of the hospital and training programs afford tremendous opportunities for exposure to a myriad of disease states and education; yet, the program does not compromise the personal relationships between patients and their medical team.
The Pediatric Hematology and Oncology fellowship is one of five fellowship programs based at Children’s Hospital. The moderate size of the program (6 fellows, 2 per year) enables fellows to develop close team dynamics, hone leadership skills, and interact with supervisors and mentors. The tremendous breadth of diseases allows fellows to attain a broad educational experience, but still focus on areas of interest in clinical care and medical research.
The hemoglobinopathy program at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland is one of the largest in the country, offering comprehensive clinical service for patients with thalassemia and sickle cell disease. Our Hemoglobinopathy Reference Laboratory is an internationally recognized clinical resource for the diagnosis of hemoglobin disorders. It serves as the reference laboratory for the California State Newborn Screening Program, as well as major cord blood centers across the country to perform definitive testing for hemoglobinopathies.
