Psychology Training Opportunities
Overview
A strong education and teaching program is integral to the mission of Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. In addition to its outstanding programs for pediatric residents, social work interns and other professional groups, Children's Hospital has long offered training programs for psychology interns and psychology fellows. These programs allow us to provide excellent care to our community today, as well as to develop top-notch professionals to serve the healthcare needs of tomorrow.
Our 191-bed pediatric hospital and specialized outpatient services provide an ideal setting for psychology training at the graduate and post-graduate level. We employ over 30 licensed psychologists in a wide range of programs, departments, and services including: Early Childhood Mental Health, the Department of Psychiatry, the Behavioral Emergency Response Team, Hematology/Oncology, school sites, the Pediatric Consultation Service, a variety of outpatient clinics, and programs serving specialized populations such as children in foster care, homeless families, etc.
The Psychology Internship and Fellowship programs provide a year of intensive training in evaluation, treatment and consultation at a level appropriate to the trainee’s skills and experience. We are dedicated to developing the diagnostic and psychotherapeutic skills of trainees who are committed to working in an urban pediatric and community setting serving youth and families. We are particularly interested in students who demonstrate an interest in serving a diverse, multi-ethnic, predominantly low-income population. Because we serve a multicultural, multi-lingual population, applicants who are fluent in a second language are encouraged to apply.
We offer training to graduate students in accredited PhD, EdD or PsyD clinical, school or counseling psychology doctoral programs. We have offered comprehensive internship training to doctoral-level psychology trainees for over 25 years.
Our programs have expanded to include training in a number of other specialized mental health programs at our hospital, as well. Our collaborative Psychology Internship program offers trainees the opportunity to experience a broader range of didactic and experiential learning from our very talented team of child, family and pediatric psychologists, while having the choice of affiliation with one of two primary placement sites as a “home base.” Trainees also have the opportunity to rotate through the other program sites to increase their exposure to different types of patients, treatment modalities, clinical responsibilities, etc.

Psychology Training Stipends
Stipends are available for Psychology Interns and Psychology Fellows. In past years we have offered stipends in the range of $20,000 to $33,000 annually. Stipends for 2012-13 will be announced when hospital budgets are finalized. We offer an excellent package of health, vision and dental insurance to our trainees.
We do not have stipends or benefits available for Practicum students.
