Rotation Goals & Objectives

The rotation goals and objectives are designed to guide residents in their learning and self-evaluation. Developed by Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland Attending Staff and Medical Education, the goals are modeled after educational guidelines developed by the Academic Pediatric Association.

  • The rotation goals and objectives correspond to the six ACGME competency areas:
    • Medical Knowledge
    • Patient Care
    • Interpersonal/Communication Skills
    • Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
    • System-Based Practices and
    • Professionalism

  • Each goal and objective targets the specific level of training for the resident (PL-1, PL-2, PL-3)

  • The goals and objectives apply to senior residents only as subspecialty rotations are only offered in the 2nd and 3rd year of training.

We recommend that residents review the specific rotational goals and objectives at the beginning of each rotation. As it is not possible for every resident to take every rotation, residents should also review the other sections listed for study preparation. The goals also will be useful when residents evaluate the faculty and the rotation, as we use this feedback to continually strive to provide an exceptional resident educational experience.
