Letter from the Program Directors

Thank you for your interest in the Pediatric Residency Program at Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. We have had a Pediatric Residency Program at Children’s for more than 80 years and have trained well over 1,000 pediatricians, who have become leaders in many fields and effective advocates for children in our community and many others. The program is now recognized as one of the leading pediatric training programs in the nation.

We hope these web pages provide you with up-to-date information about our residency program and give you some insight into how our residents thrive during the challenges of residency and are very well prepared for the whole spectrum of career paths in pediatrics.

There is a special quality about this hospital that comes from serving the neediest children in Alameda County, as well as serving tertiary care patients from all over California and nearby states, all under one roof. It is a rich educational atmosphere, ripe for learning pediatric medicine, and our residents develop a true esprit de corps.

We strive for a diverse group of residents and encourage students from communities that have been historically underrepresented to apply.

We welcome your application to Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland and look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

James S. Wright, M.D.
Director, Medical Education and Residency Program

Pamela Simms-Mackey, M.D.
Associate Director, Medical Education and Residency Program
