The Clinical Nutrition Department at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is staffed by registered dietitians who specialize in pediatrics and who provide comprehensive nutritional care for both inpatients and outpatients. Every patient who comes through our doors has access to our highly-specialized team of dietitians and nutrition experts. From newborns to young adults, it's our goal to ensure that everyone gets the nutritional support they need to thrive.

Nutrition Plans that Match Your Child’s Health and Your Family’s Life

  • Dietitians in our Clinical Nutrition department work to design nutrition plans that improve or maintain the health of patients whose diets require close monitoring.
  • Nutrition screening of all patients allows us to create a baseline for good nutritional health. We provide nutrition assessments, monitoring, and follow-up support for kids on therapeutic diets, on enteral or parenteral nutrition support, and by family or staff request.

Healthy Together Nutrition Group Class

  • “Healthy Together” is a single session group class that teaches families how to approach meaningful and sustainable lifestyle changes at home, offering education for families with children between the ages of 5 and 18.

Pediatric Nutrition Services in the Bay Area

  • A healthy diet and good nutrition aren’t just for children with medical conditions. That’s why many of our pediatric clinical nutrition services are available for picky eaters and children at risk for obesity
  • In addition to in-hospital care, we provide outpatient nutrition appointments in our off-site clinics and specialty care offices, each of which is staffed by specialist dietitians. Our outpatient clinics are located in Oakland and Walnut Creek.

Specialty Clinical Nutrition Services

  • GI nutrition clinic offers nutrition education and support to children with gastrointestinal disorders. Our pediatric specialists and nutritionists work together to diagnose and treat GI nutrition disorders such as gastric tube dependence, inflammatory bowel disease, and food allergy conditions.
  • Our pulmonary clinic is designed for children with special nutritional needs secondary to pulmonary diagnosis, including cystic fibrosis, asthma, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
  • The endocrinology clinic provides initial and follow-up support for children who have prediabetes, type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
  • Dietitians partner with the neurology clinic to address dietary concerns related to neurologic disorders. Our neurology dietitian coordinates the Pediatric Ketogenic Diet Program for refractory epilepsy.
  • We are proud to offer the only Pediatric Sports Nutrition Program in the Bay Area. We provide nutrition education and support for athletes to optimize nutrition with the goal to improve performance
  • Dietitians in the Oncology clinic provide nutritional guidance and support for children who are undergoing chemotherapy or have completed therapy.
  • Dietitians collaborate with Nephrology to manage the nutritional needs of children with nephrotic syndrome, chronic kidney disease, and other kidney disorders.
