Emergency Department

When it comes to pediatric emergency services in the Bay Area, there is no substitute for a specialty children’s hospital. Young patients require distinct tests and equipment for their small bodies. Kids are at greater risk for serious breathing problems, less tolerant of blood loss, and more vulnerable to head injury, and the younger the child, the smaller the margin for error. That's where UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland makes all the difference. With a dedicated team of experts who work solely with children, we're the leading pediatric emergency service provider in Northern California.

Why Families Choose Us

A 24/7 ACS verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center (one of only five in California)

  • In many parts of the country, paramedics and Emergency Department staff lack appropriate training in pediatric emergency medicine. UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland is an exception. Our emergency facilities are staffed with board-certified pediatric emergency medicine specialists, who are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Critical medical and surgical divisions are on call at all times for more intensive care.

We are a Pediatric Critical Care Center chosen by the State of California to provide pediatric emergency services

  • We hold an Emergency Medicine Services for Children (EMS-C) designation and approval within California to function as a Pediatric Critical Care Center (PCCC). This distinction marks us as a center of excellence in all areas of pediatric care, from emergency care and intensive care through rehabilitation services. We're the only PCCC in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

Emergency Department and Trauma Center

  • The Emergency Department at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is an ACS verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center dedicated exclusively to caring for children.
  • The Emergency Department 2 area at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is a specially-designated facility for those patients coming to the Emergency Department who need immediate attention but aren't at the trauma level.

Hospital Services beyond the Emergency Room Setting

  • Our in-house staff and resources include Emergency Department attending physicians who are pediatric specialists in emergency medicine, trauma surgery, anesthesiology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, diagnostic imaging, and critical care.
  • The Emergency Department also functions as the gateway to medical care for many East Bay children. About 60 to 70 percent of patients admitted to Children’s are first seen in the ED before being moved to more specialized departments.
  • Asthma is the most frequent reason for visits to the Emergency Department, which is why Children’s Hospital Oakland is committed to asthma education and prevention. Our 5-bed asthma care unit offers an enhanced environment for asthma education while our patients undergo efficient standardized asthma treatment.
