Orthopaedics

When a child fractures a bone, suffers a sports injury or has a congenital disorder such as scoliosis or a neurological disorder such as spina bifida, it is important for him or her to see a pediatric orthopaedist. Pediatric orthopaedists at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital are experts in treating the special orthopedic needs of developing infants, children and young adults. They address each child’s future growth as part of their treatment plan. This is how we help your child achieve the best functionality, and experience the least disruption to normal activities. With locations on both sides of the bay, our board certified pediatric orthopaedic specialists provide a full range of services in orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitation therapy, and sports-related injury treatment and rehabilitation for young athletes.

Why Families Choose Us

Full Range of Pediatric Orthopedic Care

When your child has a disability or injury, it is important to find specialists who understand how these conditions affect a child who is still growing physically and developing neurologically. Our pediatric orthopaedists specialize in treating children. They understand how kids' bones are different from adults' in how they fracture and how they heal. Our physical therapists work only with children and know how important it is to incorporate each child’s future growth and personal goals into the treatment plan.

  • Our team consists of board-certified and fellowship-trained physicians from multiple disciplines, including: orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine, and physical medicine and rehabilitation, making us the most comprehensive pediatric orthopaedic group in the region.
  • Each year, our orthopaedic team attends to more than 13,000 patient visits and performs over 1,000 surgeries. We bring together expert specialists, the latest techniques and strong research programs to provide the best care of our patients
  • When treating children with more complex injuries or disorders, our orthopaedic specialists can coordinate treatment with pediatric professionals in more than 30 sub-specialties at Benioff Children’s Hospital. • Because growing bones and cartilage are susceptible to injuries unlike those of a skeletally-mature athlete, young athletes must be managed differently from adults. When a young athlete is injured—misuse can lead to disabilities that extend into adulthood.
    • Our pediatric sports medicine specialists have extensive knowledge and experience in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of sports-related injuries in children and adolescents. We offer young athletes the most current and comprehensive medical care and educational programming available.

    Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery

In conjunction with the Plastic Surgery Department, our orthopaedic surgery specialists offer evaluation and treatment for specialized hand disorders in children from birth to age 18. Hand and microsurgery services include options for congenital anomalies, traumatic injuries, and reconstruction following burns.

Limb Lengthening and Complex Reconstruction Center

The Limb Lengthening and Complex Reconstruction Center is a specialized center with the training and experience to give children with limb length inequality, deformities and associated conditions of the upper and lower extremities the comprehensive care they need—irrespective of underlying complexity. We provide a multidisciplinary team of specialists with the clinical expertise to use advanced reconstruction techniques to help each child reach their highest level of function, comfort and mobility.
