Why Families Choose Us

Whole Child Wellness is Our Priority

  • The School Program at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is a reassuring bridge between home and hospital. By emphasizing the active, everyday part of your child’s life, we give kids hope and expectations about returning to their regular school experience.
  • Parent participation is encouraged to help children cope with school and their health. Ongoing communication between students, teachers, and even your child’s friends at school can help facilitate the learning process.

Interactive, Engaging Education

  • Our in-house classroom features a rich curriculum and frequent visits from special guests.
  • The Art Therapy Program at Children’s Hospital Oakland offers a creative outlet with weekly visits from the Artist in Residence. Kids can dabble in all kinds of art while using their creativity to help cope with the emotional toll of hospitalization.

Educational Experience You Can Count On

  • Children's School Program is fully accredited by the Oakland Unified School District, and all of our teachers have graduate degrees and advanced teaching credentials.
  • Perhaps even more importantly, our teachers are sensitive to the needs of hospitalized children. Each educator is an active member of the healthcare team, consulting with medical caregivers so that our young patients have every opportunity available to them.

Age-Appropriate Activities

  • Regular school hours and both group and individual classroom instruction are available for grades K-12. Kids who are unable to attend classroom sessions receive bedside teaching.
  • For older patients, we offer specialized instruction in higher mathematics and science as well as GED and SAT tutoring.
