About Me

Herb Schreier, MD was born in New York City, educated at Cornell and did all of his training including pediatrics and child psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He then taught at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital, where he was involved in medical care activism and evaluated bias in medical research. He moved to the Bay Area and was director of the department of psychiatry at Children’s for several years, where he has championed psychiatric and developmental pediatric training for pediatric health care workers. His research and clinical interests have been in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Munchausen by Proxy, and transgender children. He has co-authored a book on MBP, will have an entry in the latest edition of Rudolph’s Pediatrics, writes on forensic topics, and writes articles on ASD and transgender children. He helped found Mind the Gap, a local group of therapists working with transgender youth and the gender clinic at Children’s, and gave talks at The World Professional Association for Transgender Health meetings. He is an active forensic evaluator, testifies frequently, and helped published guidelines for the diagnosis and care of child abuse victims for the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.
