Relocation to Summit Campus FAQs

The UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Summit Campus is our specialty medical campus, providing the same exceptional care you know and trust. With 53 beds, many rooms have expansive views to give patients and families a quiet and healing environment.

What is this move about and why?

In preparation of our renovation of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland inpatient units to ensure mandated seismic safety requirements are met, we have expanded the existing 20-bed unit we have at the Alta Bates Medical Center (“Summit Campus”) and relocated 33 of our acute-care inpatient beds to newly-renovated private rooms on the Summit Campus. This expands the Summit Campus unit capacity to 53 acute care beds on two contiguous floors.

What moved to Alta Bates Summit Campus?

Acute care patients previously admitted to the 4-Medical Service on the Oakland Campus are now being cared for at the Summit Campus—an enhanced physical space—with the same level of service received on the Oakland Campus. In addition to private rooms with toilets, the Summit expansion provides a satellite pharmacy, a classroom and playroom, a waiting room for families and state-of-the art technologies.

What remained on the Oakland Campus?

The Oakland Campus continues to provide:

  • Emergency services
  • Pediatric intensive care
  • Neonatal intensive care
  • Hematology-Oncology
  • Bone marrow transplantation
  • Surgery

How is the Summit Campus staffed?

UCSF Benioff Children’s nursing units are already integrated and moving back and forth between the two campuses. We also offer 24/7 hospitalist, resident and practitioner coverage at the Summit Campus.

What other benefits does the Summit Campus space offer BCHO staff and patients?

The Summit Campus offers substantially improved physical space for both staff and patients, including:

  • Single private patient rooms
  • Satellite pharmacy
  • Expanded video EEG monitored beds
  • Classroom space
  • Expanded Child Life and Family Support Services
  • New patient education and entertainment technology
  • Three meeting rooms equipped with video conferencing capabilities
  • Telemedicine abilities
  • Dietary consultations
  • Social Services and Interpreter Services
  • On-site X-ray and Ultrasound
  • Other specialty consults

Is there space for a parent or guardian to sleep in the patient’s room?

We encourage parents to be with their child as much as possible. We also allow one parent or guardian to spend the night at the bedside. A sleep chair-bed, pillow, and blanket are provided.

How do I get from the Oakland Campus to the Summit Campus?

A complimentary BCHO shuttle provides transportation between the Oakland Campus and the Summit Campus, Monday through Friday, from 5:45 a.m.–7 p.m. A copy of the shuttle schedule is available at the nursing station and in the Family Lounge.
