UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland’s State-of-the-Art Outpatient Center Makes Its Official Debut

With the addition of its new building, UCSF Benioff Oakland’s Outpatient Center becomes the largest pediatric specialty care center in the East Bay

Oakland, Calif. (April 19, 2018) – UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland today celebrated the completion of its new, six-story outpatient center during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by elected officials, community leaders, UCSF and Benioff Children’s leadership, families, and other honored guests. The newly constructed, state-of-the-art building brings an additional 89,000 square feet of exam rooms, treatment facilities and family support services to the hospital’s existing outpatient center and houses advanced technologies and clinical space for specialties including orthopedics, physical rehabilitation, ENT/OHNS, pulmonology, dermatology, cardiology, outpatient surgery, neurology and neurosurgery.

“The addition of the new outpatient facility makes UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland the East Bay’s largest pediatrics specialty care center built for kids,” said Dr. Michael Anderson, President of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals and the event’s master of ceremonies. “We are proud to be expanding local access to some of the nation’s leading pediatric specialty care through our expansions and affiliations with local community hospitals and independent community pediatricians.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured speeches from attendees such as Dr. Michael Anderson, President of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals; Mark Laret, President and CEO of UCSF Health; Sam Hawgood, Chancellor of UCSF; Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf; and Oakland City Councilmember Dan Kalb.

“Oakland is proud to be the home of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland, a world-class pediatric medical center,” said Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf. “I’m very excited to join in celebrating the unveiling of their beautiful Outpatient Center that will further advance access and treatment to quality healthcare to children and families for another 100 years.”

The outpatient center houses the hospital’s first pediatric exoskeleton in the physical rehabilitation department to support stroke and spinal cord injury rehabilitation patients. In addition, a specially designed outdoor area off the main gym of the rehabilitation clinic provides an opportunity for patients to practice and master physical challenges in a real-life setting of stairs and inclines.

Among the many new hospital technologies, a state-of-the-art EEG is available for the neurology department, a fetal echocardiogram machine in the cardiology department, and the outpatient center lobby will offer a stunning interactive visual-display system that uses body tracking technology to project multimedia special-effects.

The completion of the expanded outpatient center is the first major milestone in the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland Master Plan Project, which aims to modernize the campus and meet the state’s seismic safety standards by 2020.

“By constructing new facilities and modernizing existing ones, we can continue to provide highly specialized healthcare to all children in the region and beyond, regardless of a family’s ability to pay,” said Dr. Anderson.

The expanded outpatient center is in its final activation stage as nurses, physicians and employees prepare the building for patients. The building will open to patients on May 8.
